Рестрикции-модификации система, РМ — бактериальная система защиты, созданная для рестрикции (вырезания) инфекционного фага или плазмидной ДНК. Это достигается эндонуклеотическим отщеплением инфицирующей ДНК. Чужеродная ДНК может стать резистентной к рестрикционным ферментам после модификации ее путем метилирования. Модификация осуществляется ДНК-метилтрансферазой, или модификационными метилазами, катализирующими перенос метильных групп с S-аденозилметионина на один из нуклеотидов в пределах последовательностей узнавания на каждой нити ДНК. Реципиентными нуклеотидами могут быть аденин или цитозин. Рестрикция и метилирование могут катализироваться субъединицами одного фермента.
